As most of you know, my pre-politics was spent running charities that help disadvantaged young people across the country with education and employment opportunities.
One of the things that has happened during the pandemic is work experience has dramatically reduced. It has always been difficult to get in some places with many organisations restricting it to the relatives of their employees and clients (which has bad knock-on effects for social mobility) but with so many people working at home these past 2 years, many opportunities have disappeared.
That's why I'm using my experience to lean on companies and other organisations to provide work experience placements to young people at local state schools in the constituency. I'm asking schools to put forward the young people - ensuring at least some are from disadvantaged backgrounds - and I will match them to employers that come forward to offer the placements.
I'm targeting an initial 50 placements this year and some employers have already said yes. I'll be showcasing each organisation that participates here.
