Michael Gove has said he was ‘incredibly impressed’ by Southmoor homes built by Greencore Construction, a developer of climate-positive homes that he was taken to by local MP, David Johnston.
Johnston had invited the Secretary of State to visit Greencore’s ‘Springfield Meadows’ site in order to see first-hand what is one of the only developments of their kind in the UK. Climate-positive homes go beyond carbon neutral homes by removing more carbon from the atmosphere than they produce.
The MP and the Secretary of State met with the CEO of Greencore, Jon Di-Stefano, toured the development, and met with residents who have moved into Greencore’s homes.
The Southmoor site is home to 25 climate-positive homes and Greencore plan to build 10,000 homes of this kind across England by 2035.
Michael Gove MP, Secretary of State for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities, said while visiting:
“I’ve been incredibly impressed. These are beautiful homes, built to the highest aesthetic standards but also capable of contributing positively to our environmental future. We will need new homes in the future. These are the types of homes that we will need. So, thank you David and the Greencore team for showing the way forward."
David Johnston MP said:
“I was delighted to take Michael Gove to Greencore in Southmoor to show him the great work they've done on creating climate-positive homes. He was very impressed and Greencore now has the money and the plan to build 10,000 homes across England by 2035 and I will continue to do all I can to support them.’
Jon Di-Stefano, CEO of Greencore, said:
“We were delighted to welcome both Michael Gove and David Johnston to our Springfield Meadows development. It’s exceptionally pleasing to have the government taking such a keen interest in our climate positive homes. The structure of a typical Greencore home is better than net zero in terms of embodied carbon, they are also highly energy efficient and can generate more energy than they use.
